Birth Registration for International Families in Delft Print E-mail

Formalities Before Your Baby is Born

  • If you and your partner/ husband have different nationalities, contact your consulate or embassy in advance to see if dual nationality is an option in your country. In rare cases, some countries do not allow 2 specific nationalities together and a single choice has to be made.
  • If you are married, be certain that your marriage is already officially registered at your local Gemeente (town hall).  It is usually done by submitting an international form called “apostille” provided by an administration in your home country.

General Rules

  • Only babies born in Delft can be registered at the Delft Gemeente. (If you gave birth in The Hague but you reside in Delft, your baby will need to be registered in The Hague)
  •  Your baby’s birth has to be registered within 3 days, including 2 working days Gemeente Delft is closed on weekends and holidays so if the 3rd day falls on a weekend or a holiday you are entitled to an extra working day.
  • Babies do not automatically obtain Dutch nationality from being born in The Netherlands (in some countries they do). At least one parent has to be Dutch to be granted Dutch nationality.

Who Can Register a Baby Birth

  • The father or mother of the child
  • Someone present at the birth of the child
  • The owner of the home where the birth took place
  • The manager of, or someone authorized by the institution where the birth took place

Documents for Birth Registration Certificate Application (Geboorteaangifte)

  • If you were married in The Netherlands, bring your Trouwboek. If you were registered as partners bring your partnerschapsboek.
  • Passports (or Dutch ID) of both parents are required.

  • You may ask for additional original certificates at the cost of 10.60 euro per act

Passports for Your baby (Needed for International Travel)

  • If your child has Dutch nationality, your child may be on your Dutch passport. The other parent has to sign for permission to let you travel with your child without them. Consent forms are available at that same office. If you request an individual passport for your baby, you need passport photos, following strict guidelines, made by a professional photographer. This passport implies your child can travel without written permission from your spouse and allows grand-parents for example to do so. It takes a while to obtain it so apply for it as soon as possible if you plan on visiting your family abroad.
  • If your child has other nationalities then Dutch, contact your consulate or embassy for your country’s rules on passports and IDs.

when parents are not married

  • If you are not married to the father of the baby, you need to have the father recognize the baby during the pregnancy by filling out a form together at the Publiek Balie Phoenixstraat 16, 2611 AL Delft. You can either make an appointment or go there during office hours. If you have lived abroad during the pregnancy it is strongly advisable to visit the Gemeente as there might be additional paperwork. When filling out  the father's rights form, you will be able to determine the last name of the child. Otherwise the baby will automatically get the mother's last name and it would take weeks to convert last name on all official documents. You and your partner will need your official IDs that day. Registration of the father is free of charge.
